In recent days, mayors, including New York City’s Bill de Blasio, have come in for heavy criticism for supposedly folding time after time to the police and their unions, even as reformers demanded better. It’s not wrong, but it’s only part of the story.

The failure to take a U.S. Senate seat in Mississippi from President Trump’s Republican Party served up a significant loss for national and local Democrats but, at the same time, delivered important insights on how to defeat Georgia Republican Sens. Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue in a January runoff in a state that Joe Biden snatched from Trump.

Democrats Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff are fighting the two sitting Republican senators to try to claim highly valued space in the powerful plenum, enabling Democrats to roll…

Desolate areas, desolate times. (Shutterstock)

While New York and other urban cauldrons of “anarchy” are a focus of attention this election season, I decided to pay a visit to my home state of Mississippi to get a firsthand look at how things are playing out in rural America. …

New York needs a Democratic-led U.S. Senate. Badly.

GOP Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his Republican troops will do nothing to protect blue states, like New York, New Jersey and California, from the coronavirus and economic crises. That’s obvious.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has been demanding federal funds to aid his state and telling the McConnell battalion to “stop abusing” blue states by calling federal assistance to places with the highest number of American deaths a “blue state bailout”. …

I’m posting an opinion piece below I wrote for the New York Daily News on March 26, 2020, after the coronavirus crisis began, urging states to help New York hospitals provide care to save a growing number of New Yorkers suffering from the pandemic. Medical volunteers from across the country came to New York City to help its hospitals. Now that New York is in recovery, the New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is helping other states, especially those in the South, fight the virus. …

Human rights lawyer Steven Donziger has been a longtime friend of mine, so I write this piece with some hesitation. I’m tired of his ankle cuff.

Donziger has been imprisoned in his home by Chevron and its favorite New York federal judge, Lewis Kaplan, who also arranged a court deal to require Donziger to wear this irritant ankle cuff, tracking his every move 24/7. (More about the cuff and its link to Chevron’s environmental crimes in Ecuador later.)

For the sake of his Ecuadorian clients, Donziger should get out of jail by doing what Kaplan wants for the first time…

Since the publication of this piece on Medium, the New York Times has removed the Chevron ad I cite below about 10 paragraphs into the article. I don’t know why the newspaper deleted the online ad. Here’s the ad deleted. Here’s another example, though, of a Chevron ad with the New York Times.

Also, a New York Times reporter told me the Times Magazine never assigned Langewiesche to write the article. Really? Then, why did the Times delete the Chevron ad online? I will edit this piece if Langewiesche’s editor tells me he didn’t want Langewiesche to write. If he…

If former Mayor Mike Bloomberg wants to earn respect from people of color opposed to his stop-and-frisk racial profiling and from women offended by his misogynistic comments, he should not put money into his presidential campaign. He should invest in sophisticated and intense get-out-the-vote efforts throughout the country to defeat President Trump. Tom Steyer, another mega-billionaire and presidential candidate, should do the same.

Together, they have spent more than $100 million so far on ads attacking the president. …

Chevron’s Paid Witness Who Lied to U.S. Judge Lewis Kaplan

Neeson Writes:

— An Unjust Disbarment Breaks the Fairness Rule for Not Only Donziger But Also Other Plaintiff Lawyers

— Donziger Needs a Full & Fair Opportunity to Prove His Innocence Without Chevron’s Thumb on the Scale

Charles Neeson, William F. Weld Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, is a well-known and highly-respected legal expert who served as a U.S. Supreme Court clerk and worked for the U.S. Department of Justice’ Civil Rights Division.

Below is a piece written by Neeson for the Harvard Law Journal about U.S. Federal Judge Lewis Kaplan’s misuse of collateral estoppel, a common law doctrine to prevent re-litigating issues already decided, to disbar Steven Donziger, one of the lawyers who has represented a group of indigenous Ecuadorians. The Ecuadorians filed a contamination case against the oil giant, Chevron, in Ecuador in…

For the first time since Chevron falsely accused indigenous Ecuadorians and their lawyers of bribery and fraud in a New York federal court, a NY lawyer, who judges the integrity of NYC lawyers, allowed the Ecuadorians’ lawyers to explain why one of them is not guilty of bribery and “ghostwriting” a $9 billion judgment against the US oil giant for contamination in an Amazon rainforest.

John R. Horan, the Presiding Justice on the First Department Discipline Committee allowed the lawyers to explain, in part, but it was a hell of a lot more than US District Judge Lewis Kaplan allowed…
